The digital collection of the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts contains selected works from the exceptionally valuable and rich Gallery holdings.

The Gallery was opened on 9 November 1884, and it originally included 256 works from the donation of Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer (1815-1905). The pinacotheque has been continuously upgraded and expanded by later purchases and donations by Ivan Ruzic (1849-1915), Marquis de Piennes (1825-1911), Ante Topić Mimara (1898-1987), and Zlatko Baloković (1895-1965).

European schools of painting from the 14th to the 19th century are represented by the works of Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Flemish and Central European artists of the Renaissance and Baroque works, and French Classicism and Impressionism. Inevitable are works by many prominent names in European painting: Fra Angelico, Lovro Dobricevic, Cosimo Rosselli, Mariotto Albertinelli, Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Federico Benkovic, Master of the painting "Virgo inter virgines" Joachim Patenier, David Teniers Ml., Antoine-Jean Gros, Jean Gustave Courbet -Désiré-Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, and others.

The presence of the collection in a digital format ensures researchers in the humanistic and scientific disciplines of art history gain access to the collections quickly and easily. By granting access to digital versions of the original artworks with the corresponding identification data, a wide audience will be able to study the collection, and incorporate it into their research. We hope this will increase interest in both the collection and the individual treasures within it.

Croatia's rich artistic heritage deserves visibility in both national and international research communities, and we look forward to the new digital content contributing to this.
